The High School Completion (HSC) program at Orchard View Adult Education offers adult learners the opportunity to earn their high school diploma in a supportive and flexible environment.

The student (and their parent/guardian if applicable) must express interest in the GED prep program to a staff member.

If parent/guardian is not part of initial conversation, Program Leader or Counselor will contact parent/guardian to notify them of student’s interest in the GED pathway and answer any questions.

The student should submit a written request outlining their reasons for pursuing the GED pathway and their educational goals.

Documentation of the student’s current academic standing and attendance records must be provided by their current school (if applicable).

Students shall complete the full intake process which includes the Reading 900R Appraisal, followed by the indicated Reading Casas Goals Assessment. Upon completion, the student will return for the Casas 919M Appraisal Form, followed by the indicated Math Casas Goals 2 Assessment
A formal meeting will be scheduled to determine the student’s eligibility and readiness for the GED prep
program. The meeting will include the following participants:

Review of Student’s Written Request:
Discuss the student’s reasons and motivation for pursuing the GED pathway.

Evaluation of Readiness:
Assess academic skills, attendance, and overall preparedness for the rigors of the GED program.

Exploration of Alternatives:
Discuss possible alternatives, such as continuing in an alternative education program or other support services available.

Commitment to Success:
Identify and agree upon any additional support the student may need, including tutoring, counseling, or mentoring.

Decision Making:
After all evidence for consideration has been shared, the students and parent(s) will be invited to leave and the team will collaboratively decide whether the GED pathway is in the best interest of the student.

Communication:
Once the team has come to a decision, the program leader or program counselor will reach out to the student and parent to inform them of the team decision and provide them with guidance on next steps.
If approved, an Educational Development Plan (EDP) will be developed, outlining:

Learning Goals and milestones for the GED prep program.
2
Attendance Expectations and participation requirements.
3
Support Services to assist the student in achieving their goals (e.g., academic tutoring, social-emotional counseling).

Check-In Schedule for regular progress reviews with program staff.
Both the student and their parent/guardian must sign a Commitment Agreement that confirms understanding of:

Program requirements and expectations

The importance of consistent attendance and engagement.
3
Potential pathways after obtaining the GED (e.g., post-secondary education, vocational programs,
workforce entry).
